The curriculum places emphasis on general health, fitness, and nutrition in conjunction with professional behaviors and technical skills.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science program is designed to prepare students to conduct health and fitness assessments, monitor individuals with exercise prescriptions, and make lifestyle modifications for clients. You will learn about strength and conditioning, kinesiology, motor development, and physiological adaptations to exercise.
Beyond your core courses in health, fitness, nutrition, and exercise physiology, if you are enrolled in the BS in Exercise and Sport Science degree program, you can also choose from three different concentrations to pursue a career that suits your interests and goals:
- Health and Human Performance concentration, you’ll learn to create or modify safe, effective exercise approaches for all types of clients, from young children to top athletes to the aging population. You’ll gain hands-on experience in the industry through real-world externships at sports medicine facilities, hospitals, and more. To prepare for a career as a health and fitness professional, you’ll also learn various business and marketing strategies to help you succeed. With your advanced skills, you’ll graduate prepared for certifications in Strength and Conditioning, Corrective Exercise, Personal Training, and Group Fitness Instruction from reputable organizations such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
- Applied Exercise Physiology concentration similarly prepares you for a knowledgeable, practice-oriented career, but with the addition of courses in the natural sciences. With academic groundwork in biology, chemistry, and physics, you’ll be prepared to enroll in a graduate program to launch your career as a physician associate, physical therapist, chiropractor, or exercise scientist. You will also be ready to obtain certifications through the NSCA and NASM, or as an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) through the American College of Sports Medicine.
- The Pre-Professional concentration allows students from other Allied Health programs to join the Exercise and Sport Science degree program to continue the natural sciences and major coursework to prepare for a Bachelor of Science degree and potential graduate degrees. The Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science Pre-Professional concentration was designed for graduates of programs such as the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), and ASN, among others.
The concentration selected will help each student improve their skills for their future discipline.
These degrees can equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in this growing industry.
